Going up Western Road one day we were very surprised to see men cutting the iron fences that surrounded the workhouse down, being of a curious nature we kids stopped and asked the men what they were doing? “Our bit for the war effort, retorted one, “Theses are for the making of guns and tanks for our Army.” “Cor!” one of us said, “Will there be enough when you’ve taken all these down?” There were lots of these iron railings surrounding the workhouse.
“Not nearly enough,” replied the same man, “We have to take all the Iron railings that we can find, including those around Summerfield Park”.
“Great!” we said to each other as we walked away, “We can go into the Park as often as we like without waiting for the gates to open or close.”
