When war was declared I was 9 half years old living in Romford, East Greater London. Heard announcement on wireless and first Sunday after sirens went and me and a pal hid in a dairy, but it was a false alarm. We were only going to school for half days. At school we built a concrete shelter. My brothers were in Dr Banardos. I went to live with Grandma, Father who was in the Royal Artillery, was in Burma, he was taken prisoner until the end of the war.My Mother was taken ill.

We had an air raid shelter to go to when bombs fell, when I became a teenager I became rebellious, I wouldn't go to the shelter I stayed in bed.

In 1944, at the age of 14 I joined the Sea Cadets, and tried to get into the boys
service in Navy but I didn't get in. At 17 I joined the Army I was in the 7th Army Division in Germany. |I was involved with taking refugees from Russia to "Bediefied"?
my role was escourting convoys. I enjoyed it toured around. My best memories are of the German girls.
In 1951 I left Germany and the army and got married to a girl from Romford.
