I was about four when I ran into the house shouting that 鈥渢he Germans are coming!鈥 Having warned the family, I then ran into the shelter. Unfortunately I was about two inches too high going through the door. I woke up about fifteen minutes later. I still have the scar on my forehead to this day.
We were living at 18 Woodberry Avenue in North Harrow at the time. There was an Ack Ack gun near our house and so we could see and hear all the action. In the morning we used to collect shoe boxes full of shrapnel.
I also remember that we used to have rich pickings from the local allotments. We would pinch fruit like strawberries and beans. We just used to wipe the dirt off and eat things raw. To be honest it was pretty awful.
I was evacuated with my mother to Bridport. One of the few things that I did know in life was that when you went to the beach you took a bucket and spade and made sandcastles. I was very upset to find that at Bridport the beach was sealed off with barbed wire and mines.
