I was a junior pro doing my first night duty. It was 29th December 1940. The siren had gone and the planes came over and we could hear the bombs coming down. I was working with a staff nurse and she decided to go on the balcony and have a look. After a few minutes she came back and said to me to come and have a look. When I went out on the balcony we could see the whole of London was alight. You could literally see the flames miles along - one sheet of flame - and the bombs were still going down. I felt so sorry for those nurses in the hospitals up there; Guys, St Thomas's, Barts, the whole lot. I shall never ever forget standing on that balcony and watching London burn.
