At last on May 8th 1945 there were broadcasts on the radio throughout the day announcing that the war in Europe was finally over. As I had never known any other way of life, it was difficult for me to understand what this would mean, except that my uncles would return home and rationing would end.
After my father returned home he suggested that we went for a walk around Newcastle. What a sight greeted us! The town was pack with crowds celebrating the exciting news and we made our way to Nelson Place, where complete strangers were hugging and kissing while others were singing, dancing or crying.
