I lived in George Street with my mum, dad and two sisters and a brother. This incident happened early in the war. One night Dad woke us telling us that the siren was sounding and we needed to get downstairs. We lived in a tall four storey house so this took a while. We were frightened and scurried under the table for protection. We sat in the dark with just candlelight, waiting for the all clear. We waited and we waited and we waited. Finally dawn was breaking and we heard the milkman鈥檚 horse and the bottle鈥檚 rattling. Dad said he was going to find out what was happening. He asked the milkman had he heard anything as the siren had sounded hours ago. The milkman told him the siren had indeed sounded and the all-clear had sounded shortly afterwards. We had been waiting for hours for the all-clear when it had already sounded and that was what my father had heard
