My father-In-Law Alf Williams was called up in 1940 but designated "unfit for duty" owing to having TB when he was 18. (He was born in 1913). The doctor who examined him was amazed at his huge chest expansion. While in the TB sanitorium he had to do lots of breathing exercises that developed his lung capacity. The doctor undertaking the medical said my father-in-law was very fit - he was a keen cyclist and table tennis player - but he could not be allowed to serve in the forces owing to his TB.
