I was born in West London in 1941. My memories are of the windows in our house being shattered. I was later told that they were caused by the V1 bombs, known as “Doodlebugs”, which also demolished houses in two of the neighbouring streets. My mother was always fetching us from the two bombed sites, where my younger brother and I were always playing, we were too young to realise that bombed sites were dangerous.

I recall the street party to celebrate the war’s end, but I was too young to absorb it.

I started school during September 1945, the school shelters were still there, I recall them and the street shelters being demolished.

I distinctly remember shopping with ration books.
