I was the second youngest of eleven children. I remember when the air-raid siren went off and we went to the shelter that was built in the garden. The searchlights used to go across the sky three times and then the siren would sound. We were always half-dressed, with our underwear on under our pyjamas. We would have a sing-song to drown out the noise of the guns.
