I was a child during the War and lived in Weymouth, Dorset right on the edge of the coast in a house at the top of a street overlooking the sea.
One day after school my mum and several other mums took their children to the beach for a swim and picnic. It was a small cove on the edge of Portland Harbour.
As mum was pulling my clothes over my head a low flying plane swooped over and before I could look up an enormous explosion followed.
Mum said the pilot was waving wildly, telling us to get off the beach, but we didn't have time.
The plane had dived into a barge that was anchored in the cove. Little fishing boats appeared from nowhere and began rowing out to the wreck.
This was not reported in the local paper as it was wartime and although I was there I cannot find any account of it.
