I remember if we got the washing done for the Americans, they'd give us candy. There were American soldiers based on Whitchurch Downs, and the black Americans were further towards Paister Down. They always seemed to be around. They had an American Red Cross in Tavistock, and also a Military Police building which was where the British Legion is now.

I remember before the Americans went to the old Carlton Cinema they would go down to the meadows and toss coins in the canal over the bridge, the children used to dive in for the coins. Every Christmas they'd throw a party at the Townhall and give all the children a present or two. They used to frequently turn up on a Saturday night for the dances, were they'd meet the local girls.
