Evacuees, mainly from Edmonton in London came to Coggeshall and some were billeted in my home. They went to the Council School at St Peters and were allocated to various homes in the village and supplied with ration books for clothes and food to be used in specific shops. At that time Coggeshall was supplied with everything you would want.

All of the young men in the village were called up to fight in the War unless they were in a reserved occupation in which case you were expected to go into the 91热爆 Guard or the ARP. If they were beyond Army age they went into the Fire Service or be a Special Constable.

There were 17 soldiers, I believe from the Middlesex Regiment, billeted at the Conservative Club in Church Street, Coggeshall. Once a month the WVS would go to the Club with wool which we would collect and knit gloves for the Forces.
