I was at home all the time during the war. Once I joined the Air Force I used to come home every night and go again from home in the morning. I was based at Kidbrooke — it was an Army camp but we, the Air Force was based there too. The Army then moved over the other side of the road and we had the whole of the Kidbrooke there.

We all had to wear our uniforms. Instead of saluting I used to just put my fingers up to them all because I knew them — Officers and all because they’d all just started just like me.
