I remember sitting round the breakfast table in Manchester Road I think on a Saturday morning with my mother, Aunt Nancy Dicker and her two small children (their Daddy, James, was in the Army) when there was a huge explosion which made the house tremble. My mother said "Under the stairs, quick!" Guess who was first, Enid and the baby Ralph! I just grabbed him and let the rest follow - I have never been so scared as a few more bombs were dropped on Beatrice Street, Roseberry Street. Drove Road and the County Ground. We presumed they wanted the Railway Station.
