It was New Year's Eve 1944, and I was working at a hospital in Bayeux in France. I'd become friendly with a S/Sgt in the unit. I was on night duty in charge of two wards when he arrived after one or two drinks to see me.
The Orderly quickly informed me the Chief Nurse Suster was on her Way. I quickly led S/Sgt Price to an empty bed in the far corner of the ward and popped him into it, boots and all, telling him not to make a sound, and pulling the bedclothes up to his nose! Despite the torch round, Sister did not remark on the extra patient!
I was to marry him at a Unit Wedding at the Garrison Church, St Boniface, in Antwerp three weeks after VE Day -- 24 May 1945.
