On VE Day I was driving a lorry in Germany. I had to deliver a load of clothes. At 6.30 all the Germans came out of their homes dancing. I said, 鈥淲hat鈥檚 happened? It must be the end of the war.鈥 We delivered the stuff, turned round to come back.
We were sleeping in a cowshed with the cows. The Germans were in the farmhouse. We said to them, 鈥淲hat鈥檚 happened?鈥 They said, 鈥淭he war鈥檚 over.鈥
So we went to sleep on our bed boards on the floor of the cowshed, in the middle of the cows. That was it. No drinks鈥︹o nothing.
The next morning we were moving. We got in our lorries in a convoy. This was the first day of peace. As we were going along the road a German plane came over and machine gunned us. We retaliated and shot the plane down. The pilot was a 19 year old German. One of our sergeants took his watch, but the sergeant had to give the watch back.
