This story was submitted to the People's war by Terry Mills for Three Counties Action on behalf of Stephen Ambler (son of Eric Ambler) and has been added to the site with his permission. The author fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

My Father was a driver in Dunkirk taking the men from the fields of Dunkirk to the ships and boats waiting to take them home. He was therefore one of the last to leave Dunkirk. He was ordered to destroy his wagon to prevent the enemy taking it over. This was general practice. He told me he found it profoundly upsetting to do this - it had after all, been with him for a long time and he had in fact dived under the lorry when an air attack was taking place. He also said he felt it was a mark of defeat.
