My first RAF posting was at Cardington and then at Morecombe Bay for square bashing. Where, after only three days I had a rash on my face and body. I reported to the Sick Bay where the M.O told me I鈥檇 got Ruebella. Not having heard of this diagnosis previously, I asked 鈥淲hat is that?鈥 The reply was 鈥淐ommonly German Measles鈥. In my corny humour I said 鈥淗ave they landed, sir? The M.O tried hard not to laugh and his orderly sergeant said 鈥淢onk, that鈥檚 enough of that!鈥
I was then, after my square bashing, sent to Uphaven in Wiltshire for training to become an NCO in charge of a newly to be opened RAF Station at Lusgate Batten (now Bristol International Airport)
At Uphaven a few days later, word went round that the famous British and Hollywood actor named David Niven was in the next field, with his brother, serving with a Scottish Regiment. My C.O invited the two Nivens to an Officer鈥檚 Mess Dance where the officers鈥 wives swarmed round the Nivens like bees.
A few days later, on May 10th 1940, the Germans invaded the Low Countries and the rest is history.
While at Lulsgate, I served on the Entertainment Committee where celebrity entertainers from ENSA were entertained in the Officers Mess. Celebrities included Vera Lynn, Jack Watson (of Nosmo King), blind pianist Ronald Gourley, Wilson Keppel and Betty, Squadronaires.
