Between the Two World Wars
When healed were all the sores
Amidst our grassy shire, Hermann Goering sat at dinner
To the young lad at his side, he made this observation:
鈥榊ou were too young for the last war
But you鈥檒l be just in time for the next one.鈥�

Their Dad鈥檚 were too old for the forces
Yet still they did their bit
Called 鈥渄irected labour鈥�, down the ironstone pit

So goes the local story:
Goering was bombing alphabetically
Through the telephone directory
Connived at C-O-R; crept on to C-O-V
Then sent his bombers to Coventry

Corby-God-Bless-You, Northamptonshire
The Luftwaffe pilot steers his craft clear
Shrewdly the navigator avoids-
The bomb won鈥檛 score a hit
Safe are the steel works of Stewarts and Lloyds
Nazi bigwigs have shares in it.
