I joined the army to get away from Granny who was too strict鈥攕he said I could not. I was given a hat, coat, knickers (two pairs of wool and one pair of rayon), shirt, groundsheet, cape, tie and shoes. Because I could drive I was put into the FANY (First Aid Nursing Yeomanry). We had to wear uniform whenever we went out, even to dances, where we drank lots of beer. The shoes were very clumpy.

I was stationed in Derby and used to drive to the docks in Dover. Sometimes I drove 3-ton Bedford trucks and sometimes I drove the motorbikes which escorted them鈥攐utriders.

I went to Germay three times to help entertain the troops鈥攊f you kick your leg up high, and I could, you were added to the gang.

We also had to learn the basics of truck repair work. There were cows in the area where we were stationed and because I knew how to milk them I used to go and get us milk!
