1940 I was 12 years old when I was evacuated to Lady Whittington Moe,Finchampstead, Berkshire from Canterbury. Bombs dropped in next field . So "Governor" my Mum, said we would go back to Canterbury. I went to Simon Langton Grammar School because I passed the scholarship. I remember Grandad carrying his bike over the bombed houses. He told Mum, we had to go and live with them because we had been bombed out. The Fire Watchers saved Canterbury Cathedral because they kicked the incendiary bombs which were dropped on the roof off, thus saving the Cathedral.
