I was four years old at the beginning of the second world war. We lived in a detached house at the top of the hill in a new suburb of Croydon.Before the bombing started noone culd have forseen the danger from living so near to an airport.(Croydon was an important aerodrome at that time). One afternoon I was with my granny and my sister playing on a swing. Granny had our baby brother on her lap, and we were chatting beside them. Suddenly we heard a loud bang followed by several others.The noise seemed to co come from the sky. we looked up and saw two small planes, very close together, with puffs of smoke around
them
'Look, look!'we pointed in amazement.'What are they doing?'
But Granny had quickly got off the swing and started to run, clutching the baby.
'Hurry, hurry', she cried, 'get indoors. Its a dog fight'
We wanted to watch, not go inside. How could it be a dog fight in the air? They were planes, not dogs but we had never seen Granny so scared before so we followed her inside. Mother grabbed us and pushed us under the table and the piano. The grown ups had never behaved like that before but this was the start of many strange changes in our young lives.
