As a baby each time there was an air raid I was put into a 'baby gas mask'.
I remember VE Day (8th May 1945) vividly I was 6 then. There was a bad thunder storm that day; my Mum (Christina Harvey, nee Cox 1916-2004) was doing the ironing so she turned the iron off and closed the curtains. We listened to the news on the radio and it was announced the War had ended. I remember saying "Oh good, that means no more news". As long as I could remember we had to be quiet while the news was on, and as it was always about the war and the war was now over, ergo, no more news.
On a piece of spare ground opposite our house the children in our road built a massive bonfire. Our first 'Guy' was Hitler, then on another night, with another bonfire, we burnt Mussolini, and on VJ Night we burnt Tojo (Admiral Tojo of the Japanese Navy).
