At the beginning of the war, my brother was an apprentice electrician, he carried on until he qualified and stayed in England throughout the war working on all of the local bases as they were constructed.
Just before D-Day, he received an an envelope clearly marked with a date and time to be opened. When he opened it heis orders were to report to RAF Fairford that evening with a change of clothes and wash gear. He was also told to expect to remain on the base until further notice. The problem was, that even though they had completed the work, it hadn't offically been handed over the Ministry for War and therefore they had to be on hand of anything went wrong or if there were any problems. My brother ended up staying on the base for 3 days and nights before being allowed to leave.
