Here's something that not many people know about Ramsgate in Kent during the war.
Tunnels were dug under the town, with entrances at various places, for use as air raid shelters.
Before the war, I was employed by the County Council in their offices in Aberdeen House, Ellington Road, Ramsgate. The tunnel nearest the offices started with two entrances in Ellington Park, and we had an entrance from the office. Another public entrance was in Cannon Road. The tunnel joined up with others, so that it was possible to get from one side of the town to the other, underground. In fact, one of my colleagues, who lived at East Cliff, was able to get almost home underground!
The Ramsgate Hospital had its own entrance and, I believe, had wards and operating theatres underground as well!
