In 1943 I was 22 years old, living at 28 Bentswood Road in Haywards Heath with my parents, brother and sister. I was in the Land Army, working nearby at Wivelsfield.
One day, when I was working as a Land Girl, I remember a startling incident. I was walking down the road towards Brighton, following a horse led by a carter. Suddenly a van appeared, tooting. The horse bolted -- the carter went straight underneath the horse and wagon. We had to call an ambulance -- a farmer had to be summoned to take him to hospital in Haywards Heath.
It did scare me -- I didn't have much experience of horses myself -- but in those days you took everything in your stride. I spent that winter threshing -- it was fun being a landgirl!
