I was born in a small village in the south of Lincolnshire surrounded by air fields.
The skies during the war years were full of activity and I remember clearly as a small child standing with my parents watching the planes go out, we could see the rear gunner as they passed and slowly gained height.
As they returned the next day there was an air of unexplained stillness and quiet whilst they were counted back.
I will never forget the eerier stillness.
