George Blackburn was an 18 year old Miner when he left Castleford in West Yorkshire to join the Royal Artillary, he was eventualy to see frontline action with the 111th field regiment in many battles and 'firefights' in North Africa with the 8th army and later on Sicily and mainland Italy with the invading British and American Forces.
He gained the rank of Sgt and was respected and liked by his comrades and several American GI's he went on to serve in Greece and the islands and mainland of Yugoslavia.
Following his discharge from the forces after a total of 7 years service he returned to his home town but not to the Mining industy preferring employment in outdoor occupations instead, He was to marry 3 times but never had any children although he was a much loved Uncle.
