During 1940 Evelyn was training as nurse, she was 17, which was a year to young to practice nursing, but due to the war she was able to help people.

She was working in Alder Hey hospital during the May Blitz. The hospital was turned into an emergency hospital. The whole hospital was used but the maternity ward was used most frequently. Although the wing itself was badly damaged and full of debris, mattresses where put on the floor with injured soldiers on top. The ward was full of newborn babies with gastric enteritis, which was highly contagious and a serious disease. The babies had all died by the end of the war.

Eventually, the hospital started to take German soldiers; British officers were stood on guard outside to protect nurses. Fortunately, no trouble was encountered.

Evelyn carried her nursing training on in London, shortly after the war had finished.
