My Gran was a clippie (collected tickets) for the Bristol Omnibus Company she had many stories about narrow escapes during the war:

One time she was on a late shift, she finished work and started on her trip home. Passing through the centre of the city the air raid sirens started. She made for the nearest shelter. When she went in she was confronted by a gang of leary (drunken) blokes -she made a quick decision that she was safer in the streets. She got home safely but next day discovoured that the shelter had taken a direct hit and their were no survivors.

Another time, another air raid siren sounded whilst she was working. The driver parked up at the top of Whiteladies Road by the downs. They went to the nearest shelter and waited for the all clear. On returning they found the bus on fire- it had been hit by a bomb.
