This story was submitted to the People’s War site by Deena Campbell from CSV Action Desk on behalf of Miss Pat Johnson and has been added to the site with her permission. Miss Johnson fully understands the site’s terms and conditions.

My Gran was a Catholic and my mum was a Protestant — dad switched when it came to school — we had to go to a Catholic School. My mother hated the place. She must have had a terrific time. “Remember that you’re a Brummie and a Protestant!” she would say. When we came back to go to school here we had Welsh accents and nobody could understand us. Also once dad was back, my brother had a hard time not being the head of the family.
