Jean Hill, Craven Arms

I was a nurse during the war at the Royal Berkshire hospital in Reading and remember how finding my way around a new area in the black out could be very disorientating. I also remember the crowded trains that ground to a halt in the pitch black when a raid was in process and the fact that everyone sang and tried to remain jolly.

One Wednesday afternoon Reading was bombed and although it missed its target, the railway sidings, it hit the town instead; Fortunately the fact that it was half day closing saved a lot of lives.
