This story was submitted to the People's war site by a volunteerfrom CSV Actiondesk on behalf of Mr William Fry and has been added to the site with his permission. Mr Fry fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

During the war my father continued his work on the railway, this was especially needed for the movement of troops. Many a day he would return, from checking the signals and the men, with a hare or chicken and even a pig from one of the farms near the lines. Then having a chicken to eat was like a high day and holiday.

I worked as a watch repairer and had my own shop. I knew other shopkeepers and we would exchange goods, even food items.
