We had an Anderson Shelter in the garden. My father was in the Army and we used to stand outside watching the German and British planes fighting each other in the sky.

My brother had joined up before the war. My mother and father had had a few words-she laughingly told him to "go and join the Army!" He was missing for 3 days-we searched the hospitals and reported him missing at the the Police Station. A knock at the door -a parcel was thrown in and my father walked in -in uniform!

My brother was killed in Tunis in 1943, aged 21 years. He had been married for 6 months.
