Aged 11 at the end of the war I can remember bombs being dropped at Matthew Bank South Gosforth. Instead of going to an air raid shelter we used under the stairs.
We heard the sirens and saw search lights and heard people shouting. There were two brothers myself and mam so it was a squash in a 2 bedroomed house.
We lived on Station Road in South Gosforth. We had to stay in for hours and kept something to drink but food was short, probably just bread. Grandmother had hens so they did get eggs and butter. Candles were all over, electric went off and they were in the dark. The brothers were 7 and 9 and we told stories. Dad was away in Germany driving officers around as he was a Batman.He was away 1939-45 and was like a stranger at first when he returned home. On VE Day I remember everyone screaming and shouting and there was a street party.
