This story was submitted to the People's War site by Ian Hayes of the 91热爆 GMR Action Desk on behalf of Alan Morgan and has been added to the site with his permission. The author fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

For the two days following the Stuttgart raid, Bomber Command was "stood down". On Wednesday 23rd. 16 aircraft had been detailed for ops but this was cancelled during the afternoon.
Runway repairs at Fiskerton caused by P/O Clarke's crash had not yet been completed, so the Squadron's Lancasters remained at Dunholme Lodge where they had landed after the Stuttgart trip. On Thursday morning orders came through for an attack on Schweinfurt. This was the first time Bomber Command had attacked Germany's main ball-bearing factories, and it followed a B-17 raid made by the USAAF the previous day. A new tactic was also introduced whereby the main force was split in two, with two hours separating each wave.
