Fourteenth Army: A Soldier鈥檚 Prayers. A small prayer book to take everywhere.
It was a bit rough to be in the infantry: we pretty well walked everywhere and simply had what we stood up in. We had food issued to us and we had to carry it wherever we went. Plus we carried all our ammunition and mortar bombs. Our task was to secure Burma and we went about that, as well as we could. We were often short of food and short of water. In one place, for example, the Japanese had put oil drums down the village wells so that the water was contaminated. That was the sort of thing that we had to deal with on a day to day basis. Later when the Japanese had retreated from Burma, we were pulled back to India, so that we could marshal together before invading Malaya; it was about then that the atomic bomb was dropped and the war came to an end.
