I have vivid memories of marching to Waterloo Station from Walworth (a very long journey) to be evacuated to Topsham near Exeter. I remember all four of my billets, the first for one week and the second in Topsham for seven months. The third and fourth were in Newton Abbot for four weeks and then for two months. My mother arranged a coach for parents to visit us on two occasions. I returned home for a family wedding and Newton Abbot was bombed badly, so I never returned. Our home in London sustained a direct hit and was completely demolished. We lived and slept in an Anderson shelter for six weeks.
