I was 5 when the war started and 11 when it ended. What has really stuck in my mind is when they bombed the viaduct here in Brighton. I would have been around 9 and on my way to the shop at the bottom of Ditchling Road buying a loaf of bread for my neighbour. There was a baker鈥檚 shop at the corner. As I was walking down the hill an aeroplane started circling around so close that I could see the pilot! Seconds later he started machine gunning the street. I ran for my life and my neighbour came and got me and put me in the cupboard under the stairs and she wouldn鈥檛 let me out for what felt like a long time. When I got home to my mother all the windows in the house were gone, but luckily no one I knew got hurt that time.
