This story was submitted to the People's War site by CSV/91热爆 Radio Nottingham on behalf of Patrick Bettson with his permission. The author fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

Arthur is Patrick's uncle. He went out on a vessel to test and practise firing 25 lb guns. None of the soldiers were given any protection and both of Arthur's eardrums burst. Before the war, he had worked in a textile factory in Sutton-in-Ashfield where the noise was so great, they had all learned to lip read. When Arthur tried to claim some compensation for his loss of hearing, it was refused because the authorities insisted he must have learnt to lip read after the accident, not before. They decided he hadn't suffered any loss.
