During the war, as a child with 9 brothers and sisters (five boys/five girls) I experienced rationing. As my mother could not get enough food to keep the family well. She purchased food like rice, sugar, flour and cornmeal. Even with these she was only able to purchase a small amount during the war. Clothing material was also rationed, she could not get enough to make clothes for the family.
As a child in Jamaca I have memories of seeing submarines and airships. I even had the experience of going aboard one of the submarines by being invited onboard by one of the sailors to see their sleeping quarters. After seeing how they were, on my coming to britain in 1954 my bedroom was exactly as the salor had shown us on the submarine.
In Jamaca Men and women were recruited for the war. The men for the airforce and Navy and the women for the WRVS. After the war the windrush took some of the soldiers back to Jamaca but on seeing the difference in Jamaca they didnt want their children to experience living their so decided to return to Britain.
