I remember being very frightened at the age of four when, while staying with my grandparents in Silverdale (Lancashire), a bomb destined for Barrow-in-Furness landed on the beach in front of some fishermen's cottages near their house.
They had to get bomb disposal men to defuse the bomb and we all had to stay indoors while they did it. There were my mother's parents, Amelia and Peter Hayes, my brother Gordon and sister Fiona Anne and myself, all waiting for the bomb to go off.
I had a much nicer memory shortly afterwards. I was at school in Silverdale and our teacher, Miss Beezley, took us to collect rose hips in the woods. They were to be given to the government to make rose hip syrup for the troops for vitamins.
