On Sturton Road near to Saxilby, the government erected wooden huts and about 20-25 Irishmen came over. They lived in the huts and worked the farms alongside the land army girls. It was hard work as very few of our men were left to produce food for the country - no machines in those days. The sugar beet was all hoed out with a hand held hoe. They went up and down the rows all day long thinning the rows of beet so when it began to grow it was able to fill out and produce a better crop.
