We were at Brockwell Park — my mum, me and brothers. We were deciding whether to go home or meet my dad, who was at the barbers. We decided to go to the barber’s shop. We heard a doodle bug go over. The barber kept cutting my dad’s hair. You knew when the bomb was coming because you were always listening and you’d often comment “I wonder where that went off”. Anyway the noise suddenly stopped and the bomb went off. I remember the bottles of hair tonics on the barbers shelf rattling and then they all fell off.
We lived around Trelawn Road and Morval Road, Brixton. We decided to go home. As we walked, there were fire engines rushing all around. We turned the corner into our road and we could see that the houses on one side of the road had been hit and on the other side, the house were left standing. From number 11 or 12 to number 27 there was a massive hole in the ground. Our house had been at number 23. I remember my mum crying. I can only think that if we had not decided to go to meet my dad at the barbers, we would have come home and none of us would have survived.
