In September 1940, the air attacks on London had just begun with great intensity. The air raid siren went quite early on a Saturday evening and my family moved into the Anderson shelter in the garden. Following many hours of activity and intervals of quiet, my sister wanted to go back to the house. This was refused by my Mother who insisted they remained in the shelter until the All Clear sounded. An hour or two later, my sister requested, yet again, to go indoors. Subsequently my Mother agreed and they went back into the house but slept on the mattress under the big kitchen table. This move saved the family, because some hours later a bomb fell on the Anderson shelter and most of the house was demolished, but they all survived.
