I travelled from Elgin, on my own, to Edinburgh. I was sixteen and a few months. At Waverley Station, I met up with Alex Lyall from Leith and we went by train to Winchester.
This was 1944. We were the only two Scotsmen in the regiment. The Commanding Officer, Lt Colonel Turner asked why two Scots were attached to a London regiment. I said it was to keep up the morale of all the English troops.
