I was 13 years old when my mother died from T>B> I was the eldest in the family with two younger brothers and one sister. My father was De-mobilised from the army to look after us , and on his return to civvy street was an A.R.P.Warden patrolling at night.
I looked after us all. I was 15 years old when the war was eventually over. On V.E. day we had a big party in Mill Lane Newcastle. The streets were awash with streamers stretching from house to house, and everyone was very excited.We brought tables and chairs outside and set them next to each other. Everybody contributed what they could to the party, though things were in very short supply due to rationing. We had sandwiches, pies,and cakes made with powdered eggs. Folks brought wirelesses and gramophones into the street and we sang and danced because the war was over. It was mostly women and children, the men were still away on active service, apart from a handful like my dad.
We had a grand day, everyone was happy, peace at last.
