In August 1940 I was hop picking with my mother and Patrick 18 months old, in part of Uckfield now know as Manor Park. There were about 20 to 30 people we were watching a dog fight between several RAF and Luftwaffe planes. We were all cheering when suddenly a German plane sprayed the hop garden with bullets, we hid the children under the hop bins, and luckily no one was hurt.
On the way home we saw a damaged German plane being taken through the town on a carrier. Then near the station another German plane swooped down and sprayed us with bullets again.
