My uncle, Mr. Harry, had the village shop in Carnyorth and I remember him standing on the village green and saying "Look at the Harry Trembath, you'll not see anyhting like that again; they are going to D. Day". I can't remember exactly the D. Day landings but seeing the invasion fleet made your blood run cold and made the hair on the back of your neck stand up. On and on it went all day, spitfires flying patrols, destroyers guarding submarines and barrage balloons. As we were young it made us think. Where are they going? Who will be coming back?
I met a gentleman at Trebah a couple of weeks ago who had lived in my sisters house while he had been stationed in Penzance. He came back a few years ago and I took him up to his room and he came down crying - that had been his place. He said that my friend Jimmy had been killed by a sniper two days after D. Day, sixty years ago today. We put up a Union Jack on the gate for him but apart from Newlyn and Trebah, there weren't many Union Jacks. Jimmy, aged nineteen, never came back but I have been shown a photograph of him. Sad.
