Story told to Christine Barker at the VE Day Celebrations in Beverley 2005

We lived down Beakney Street in Hull. My dad was in bed; he would never get up for the sirens. So we all went to the shelter and left him in bed 鈥渉e said if anything鈥檚 coming to hit me it鈥檒l say watch out Paddy here I come鈥. Anyway one day an incendiary bomb came through the roof, hit him on his arm, bounced off and went through the kitchen ceiling and wedged there.

Of course it caused a fire and my mam went on the step and shouted 鈥渇ire fire鈥 and the neighbours were having a lot off laughing at her because it was so obvious there was a fire, so she said, 鈥渨hat did you expect me to shout? Hot peas!鈥 It broke dads arm though and they had to take him to Hull Royal.
